33% of the world’s food is wasted before it even lands on our plates. This really is a startling statistic and surely something doesn’t add up. Many believe it is our confusion of expiry dates that is partially responsible for the issue.
90% of Americans throw away food prematurely because they believe it has expired. There is so much confusion surrounding expiry dates and very few know the difference between use-by date, best-before date, and sell-by date.
People need to realize that expiration dates are there to indicate a product’s freshness and they are in no way an indication of how safe the food is to eat.
Check out this infographic from Lakeshore Convention Centre for more information on expiry dates and what they really mean. Hopefully, it will make you think twice before throwing away perfectly good food.
