Weekend Update: Glunz Beer “Hirter Überbrew” Competition

In partnership with Square Kegs homebrew club, Louis Glunz Beer, Inc., Chicagoland’s premier craft and specialty import beer distributor and importer of Hirter Bier, presents the Hirter Überbrew homebrew competition awards ceremony and celebration on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014. The party, which is open to the public, follows the judging at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) at DANK Haus German American Cultural Center (4740 N. Western Ave., Chicago; 773.561.9181). Guests have the opportunity to meet Klaus Möller and Nikolaus Riegler, the fifth and sixth-generation owners, and Brewmaster Roland Winter of Brauerei Hirt, the 744-year-old Austrian brewery that produces Hirter. Privat Pils and Morchl will be available on tap; guests receive a complimentary Hirter glass with the purchase of a beer. Authentic German folk/pop music will be provided by Alpine Thunder Band.

Judging and tasting for the homebrew competition of German-inspired beer styles is not open to the public. A panel of BJCP-certified judges will evaluate more than 100 homebrew entries from as far away as California, with judging assistance from Brauerei Hirt’s owners and brewmaster. The Best in Show beer wins a $1,500 scholarship to Chicago’s Siebel Institute of Technology, America’s oldest brewing school. This is an AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition.
