Indie Rockers: Weslynn

With Binge Magazine’s Fitness Week coming to an end, we welcome back our New Music Mondays with the much talented and upcoming Indie rock band, Weslynn. Weslynn was founded while all members were attending college at Arizona State University in August of 2013. The three members Jared Geyer, Greg Olin, and Kevin Holmes grew up together and had an instant connection when the trio began writing music in the South Phoenix, Ahwatukee area. They have built a large fan base locally, as well as internationally by playing local coffee shops and venues, releasing free home recordings, and videos online. Their debut album is set to be recorded this summer with good friend and producer David Dreas in Nashville, TN, in June of 2014.

Ultimately, Weslynn defines their mission by wanting to create unique & positive music to the entire world. Guitarist and Songwriter Greg Olin explains: “I feel the passion to release something that a person can feel in their soul, not just a song we can release that can catch radio play, I want the person that hears it to know and feel what our song is all about”. Weslynn has their goals set high and they will not stop until they are achieved.

The boys from Weslynn were kind enough to go one on one with us and answer some of our questions surrounding the band’s current status and future plans. Check em out!

Binge Magazine:
With the debut album set to be recorded in Summer 2014, when can we expect the album to be released?

Weslynn:
We are hoping once we finish the record we can successfully shop it to major record labels. If that’s the case, the record could be delayed a while until the logistics get finalized. If we decide to do an independent release we are shooting for a late summer release sometime in August. We will be posting many cover songs and videos to keep the fans entertained.

Binge Magazine:
How cool is it that you guys grew up together? How does this make the band’s job easier, or does it make it more difficult?

Weslynn:
We definitely feel like us growing up together makes the band a lot easier. To us, it is something so very special we consider ourselves brothers, we have hung out almost every day for the past 4 or 5 years, so when we need to work on something or write music it doesn’t feel like work at all, it feels very natural like three best friends making music, which is what it is all about for us. Of course there are times where we butt heads but nothing that is every serious or lasts more than 5 minutes.

Binge Magazine:
So… you guys went to ASU? Let’s hear 1 crazy thing you guys did while attending. Could be individually answered. We want the dirt!

Weslynn:
ASU has been a wild time for all of us we all started attending at different times so when we were all there at the same time finally, I don’t think the campus was ready for us.
Greg: My first year was nuts, I remember my first week there I was so interested in meeting all of the new ladies I didn’t go to any of my classes for the first 5 days. I just basically wandered around campus making new friends.

Binge Magazine:
Who are some of the band’s music heroes? Inspirations? Idols you guys look up to?

Weslynn:
The cool thing about us is we actually all listen to similar music and artists. A huge influence for us would have to be John Mayer, he is obviously one of the best artists and guitar players in the musical world. Another huge hero to us would be Dan Layus of Augustana; the emotion that he puts into his lyrics is something that just touches us all. We are also really inspired by other local bands in the Phoenix area. There are so many talented musicians out here. Others include, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Lynard Skynyrd all the great classics.

Binge Magazine:
Name the one place in the world where you would love to play at, and who would you invite to play along side with Weslynn?

Weslynn:
That is a tough one, there are so many places where we have dreamed of playing, I think something amazing would be able to play the “Royal Albert Hall” in London, England. The place has so much history and it’s basically a legend. We would love to play alongside bands like The 1975, Passenger, Augustana, The Maine and Lydia.

Binge Magazine:
What is the long term goal for Weslynn?

Weslynn:
Long Term: we just want to make as much music as possible, and meet as many amazing people as we can. This has been a dream of all of ours since we first picked up instruments. We want to just keep playing as long as we can.
