Whether you’re an avid hair changer, a six-week trimmer, or someone who’s guilty of skipping the salon until you literally can’t ignore it anymore, the one thing we can all agree on is that you need to be comfortable with person behind the chair. This may seem like a no-brainer, but that comfortability goes beyond trusting that they’ll do a good job. It’s about the personality, the passion and the way they carry themselves.

Being the kind of person who’s got unruly hair, I take my very scarce salon trips extremely seriously. A few months ago Instagram introduced me to one of Chicago’s most likable, talented and passionate hair experts, Jordan Heidenwith of Dennis Bartolomei Salon . It was clear from his photos that he was skilled and the way he embraced his clients wishes each individually was a breath of fresh air. What most stuck out about Jordan was his lively personality that could light up a room, and even more so a salon.

Speaking with Jordan on both a professional and personal level it was clear that he takes his work very seriously. Combining his passions and unique talent to create masterpieces on some of Chicago’s most photographed ladies hasn’t gone to his head though he should be very proud of his list of clientele and being part of the team at Chicago’s finest salon. Jordan is proof that being a good person and taking pride in your work can help make your dreams come true.

We got to speak with Jordan about his experiences, influences and beyond. Go see him at Dennis Bartolomei Salon and be sure to follow him on Instagram for daily hair inspiration (and envy)!

What initially got you interested in pursuing a career in the hair industry?

I’d have to say my mother. She was always forcing me to do her or my families hair. I have several siblings so I was always busy!

It’s clear you’re passionate about your work- what is your favorite part of what you do?

I love the personal relationships that is built with people. It’s so nice to be able to make a positive impact in someone’s life in just a few hours.

It’s sometimes (ok, a lot of times!) hard to make changes to our hair, but you have a way of making your clients feel comfortable. What tips do you have for others in the industry who are struggling to make that connection with their clients?

First you must master what they are comfortable with. What they want! Build their trust and then offer change. Makes things much easier when they already love your work!

With so many trends coming and going, how do you stay on top of what’s ‘hot’ at the moment?

I do a lot of research via Instagram. I follow all the top hairstylist who do all the hottest models and celebrities. They have such an influence on what I do at Dennis Bartolomei Salon everyday.

With social media playing such a big part in showcasing your work, do you feel like this has significantly helped build clientele in a big city like Chicago?

Very much so! With so many hairstylist in the city it’s the perfect way to show off your work to people in the area. People are always looking for great hair!

Cutting vs Coloring- which do you enjoy more?

Color. Normally women are more likely be up for a color change over a style change.

What’s the most extreme change someone has ever come to you requesting, if anything out of the ordinary?

Not an extreme color, but definitely an extreme change. Someone whom I previously had been coloring dark brown wanted to be a bright blonde..in one day! She also had hair to her butt and very dense! It took me ten hours!
