Any Dream Will Do: The Broadway Power Couple

What do you get when you pair a 5’3 powerhouse voice, with a 6’1 powerhouse voice? Well, you probably wouldn’t expect to get a love story, a success story, and a Broadway tour, but lucky for them (and us!) that was the unexpected outcome for Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo-Young. Both madly in love and starring in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat side by side.

I was lucky enough to catch a show while they were in Chicago, and sit down with this dynamic duo post-performance. We met at a small bar cornering the theatre that they had just performed at. The two walked in hand-in-hand with grins the size of the city, Diana carrying a bouquet of flowers given to her by an adoring fan.

As they cozy into the booth, fans and cast-mates walk by the window, and without missing a beat, Ace and Diana smile and wave at each one. This was just the first impression I got of this couple who’s as humble as can be with hearts just as big as you’d hope.

We quickly chatted and I, of course, had to introduce my sister, Becky, who was along with me for the interview. I actually owe this to her, because she was the one who suggested we see the show and tweet Ace for an interview- thanks, Beck! They validate their sweetness by engaging in conversation, and we all automatically feel like we’ve known each other forever.

“Let’s do this,” Ace says excitedly, still hand in hand with his beautiful wife. I briefly explain that our magazine also doubles as a work-relationship, as Binge was founded by myself and my boyfriend, Sal, so to see the dynamic of their work-relationship is awe inspiring. Ace jumps in with “We’re always creating, that’s what we call it, because it’s our passion, and it’s what we love, so we don’t call it work…we’re very lucky.”

Binge Magazine: Joseph is all about the dream, I’m sure you, like every girl have always dreamed of love and success…how does this live up to your biggest dreams?
Diana: This is so much bigger than anything I could have ever dreamed of in my life, to be able to put myself in this situation is like, you know, like you said…we’re girls, we do dream but WHAAAT? I’ve been saying to Ace, you know your life is so great when you’re reality is so much better than your dreams. I don’t want to go to sleep! I tell him, I get to see you every night, we get to work together every day. Nobodies lives are perfect by any means, we all have our ups and downs but I’m so happy to be where we are any hopefully there are many more Ups than downs to come!

Binge Magazine: How cool is it to see your dreams being able to align with your personal life?
Ace:The thing for me is that we’ve both worked really hard individually, and doing the things we did, without knowing the other person, the line-up of things, it’s like we both went to the same frat house in college, we understand what the other’s been through and we joke about how we went to the same “university” but didn’t meet there. Then doing Hair, that was another life changer, and we were the leaders of that and it really helped us open up creatively, and now because of that, the things we worked so hard for, we get to have fun. While were doing Joseph were still going back to our room and writing songs, and when we get back to our home in Nashville, were going to record them. This is awesome! Our work is fun, the people we work with are having a blast, no one is uncomfortable at work and everyone is excited about the project, and were all striving to make it better every day.

Ace and Diana chat with me about their lives prior to Idol, and prior to their success in the business. They chat about how neither of them came from what some people would consider “riches,” and how because of that, it makes them both truly appreciate their life, love and success (& food ;)) while never taking anything for granted.

Binge Magazine: We know a lot of people (myself included) struggle with keeping their passions afloat while balancing work-life to make ends meet (cough, What advice do you have for anyone, young or old, in these situations?

Ace: Well, mine’s simple. Life is never easy, do what you have to do in order to do what you want to do. You can’t let your life teeter financially, until your passion takes over, and there is ALWAYS time to work on your passion. So, do what you have to do, so you can do what you want to do.

Diana: Ok, well I’m going to give the hippy response. It’s funny, it’s not my quote by any means, but there’s a quote that says “The grass on the other side is not always greener, the grass is greener where you water it.” To me, it’s all about perception. No matter what you do, you choose your own happiness. If you’re not happy…Change it! You are in charge of your life, nobody can tell you no. Nobody can hold you back but yourself. That’s my biggest thing for me, sometimes growing up, you sometimes think what your circumstances are creates you, or defines you, and they don’t at all. I think that’s been my biggest pull in life, especially in my twenties. Moving around, doing strange things and my family is like “your going to get naked on stage?!” or, moving to L.A.-“do you have a job?” well, no, but I’m moving to L.A! Or, I’m moving to Nashville- “do you know anyone?” No, but I’m moving to Nashville! But, I created my life, the ups and downs I sometimes can’t change, but I can depict how I react to them, and handle them…that’s been my biggest thing, always see the positive side and see the silver lining. Keep going! If you keep a positive outlook, you will create your own paradise.

Ace: Another big thing is…Everyone is afraid. The whole World is afraid to say hello, so, just know that you don’t need someone to introduce you to someone you want to work with. That person who can introduce you may not be liked on the other end, which means you’re not liked. You have to have the guts to go up to the person you want to work with and say hi.

Diana: All levels have struggles. I don’t think there is one person in the World who doesn’t have a daily issue of something. Everyone is going through something, it doesn’t matter if your rich or poor.

I can’t say enough good things about these two as individuals, as a power couple, and as performers. If you haven’t seen it yet…get tickets NOW for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! We look forward to seeing these two take the stage over and over again and can’t wait to see what their next endeavor will be!
