Chris Bukowski: Every Rose has its Thorn

“There is no reason to go on a show like that and pretend to be someone you’re not. I mean, people get angry, people get excited, people get emotional, it’s just normal. People aren’t always happy, they aren’t always 100% right all of the time, so it’s like, that’s what surprised me about some of the other guys, it’s like there is no way that is who he really is.”- Chris Bukowski

How did you decide to go on the Bachelorette?
CB: I was living in New York at the time,  and one of my friends from back home, she actually wrote like a 5 page letter nominating me without me even knowing. They called me a couple of months later and I thought it was a joke. Since I was working in New York at the time, I said no way. They kept calling me and calling me. I ended up getting a job in Chicago and moving back, and they called me to ask if I would meet them for a casting at this hotel. As soon as I found out it was Emily, I decided to do it. My mom had watched her on The Bachelor and was in love with her, so I figured why not.

Did you know for sure that it was Emily, right?
CB::Oh yeah, there is no way I would’ve gone on the show not knowing who it was. No chance in the World. Because what if you go and talk to her and you’re like, “oh no, I just really don’t like her.” It’s a waste of time first of all, so, once I knew it was Emily I knew I could do this.

In comparison, what do you think was a better experience for you? Bachelorette or Bachelor Pad?

CB: Oh, Bachelorette, I mean it’s kind of hard to compare the two. I loved the bachelorette, I mean obviously I had feelings for Emily, which was the main part, but at the same time I got to travel the World. The experience itself is just crazy, you don’t just experience things like that. Bachelor Pad on the other hand, is like a giant fraternity house, but with girls in it. But, definitely the Bachelorette…that was something that was a great experience for me.

What was the biggest lesson you learned about yourself during the filming of these shows?

CB:: From being on the bachelorette, honestly, I learned how I can actually express myself emotionally about how I feel. Emily kind of made it easy for me to open up and express my feelings to her, and that’s something that in a previous relationship it wasn’t that easy for me to do. I learned that it was something I was actually capable of doing. I also learned that if there is really something I want or believe in I’m not going to hold back and let that stop me from something I believe strongly in.

From the beginning, America could see that you didn’t put on an act, you were exactly you. You could see your emotions really opening up through the season, is that something that was hard for you to watch back?
CB:: No, not really. It wasn’t hard for me to watch back, I mean I saw there were times when I got really upset and emotional, but I’m not going to hold back. That’s really that way I am, I wasn’t going to pretend I was someone else for the show because then I would not only be cheating myself, but I would be cheating Emily. There is no reason to go on a show like that and pretend to be someone you’re not. I mean, people get angry, people get excited, people get emotional, it’s just normal. People aren’t always happy, they aren’t always 100% right all of the time, so it’s like, that’s what surprised me about some of the other guys, it’s like there is no way that is who he really is.

Who were the guys that you were closest with on Bachelorette?

CB::The two guys I was closest with were Jef and Arie. From the beginning when we started traveling, we were always travel buddies and I got to know them the best.

What if they asked you to do the Bachelor, would that be something you would do?

CB:: I would consider that in the future, but not right now. This has just been a lot, I want to go back to just the way it was for a while. I’m pretty confident that I will find a girl and not have to go back on TV for it.
